Top five Saturdays

Preparation for Saturday night

Oh Saturday, how I once loved thee so!

My top favourite Saturday activities of years gone by.....

  1. Indulging in long and lazy sleep ins
  2. Brunching with friends at the latest hip cafe
  3. (Clothes) shopping, pampering and primping
  4. Catching up on gossip and ... the laundry washing
  5. Preparing for a Saturday night of fun, adventure and excitement
My top favourite Saturday activities of today.....
  1. Fantasying about a long and lazy sleep in
  2. Enjoying a latte SOLO in a cafe on Lygon Street
  3. Getting ALL the laundry washed and dried
  4. Escaping into a social media coma
  5. Preparing for a Saturday night of binge-watching the latest hip TV series
I do not feel as excited by the thought of Saturday as I once did. But maybe not all that much has changed.

What do you do with your Saturdays?

I miss Saturday morning, rolling out of bed, not shaving, getting into my car with my girls, driving to the supermarket, squeezing the fruit, getting my car washed, taking walks - Barack Obama

Books, books, books, everywhere you look!

I always have a stack of books sitting on my bedside table, on the floor in my lounge room and taking up space on my kitchen table. Fiction and non-fiction.  Chit-lit. Self-help. Cooking. You name it , I've probably got it.

I've read some of these books. Others I've browsed through. Some are completely untouched.

Just recently I suggested a friend read one of Brene Brown's books. Not a specific one - just go read her stuff!  We were discussing being vulnerable in a professional environment and what's appropriate and what's not.

So it's time I follow my own advice and I plan to read Brene's Daring Greatly this week. I'll let you know how I go.

What about you? Are you a book horder or a borrower? Is there a must read on your list?

    I write everywhere man!

    Today's writing view

    Where do you write from?

Do you have a special space?

Does it help you write more effectively or efficiently?

Is a special space just for you?

A place to dream and create?

I write/blog anyway I can. On the go. When time and demands allow. I am still writing on an iPad mini. My hearts desire is an MacBook Pro and a room with a view. One day......

How to no longer feel self conscious by REALLY doing something ...... anything!

In my many years as an acting coach and facilitator the most important lesson I have ever (and will ever) teach is the ability to really listen.

The second most important lesson is how to really do.  And when you really do you will discover the freedom from self consciousness. You will discover that when you truly put all your attention onto something outside of yourself you will no longer feel self conscious. You will discover that once you start really doing you will become more available to your creative impulses, others, the fullness of the moment and you will no longer be existing just in your head.

I can hear you laugh. 'Really do! Why would I need to learn how to really do? All I do is DO!'

Yes that may be so - yet I will still question 'are you really doing whatever it is you do, 100% in this moment?'

It does not matter what your creative pursuit is. It really does not matter what it is you do. These next four steps will transform how you do
    1. Ensure the activity you intend to do is physically involving and you know what it is you are going to do - be specific (Thinking is part of the planning not the doing)
    2. Know when you have achieved what you have set out to do - an end point
    3. Give yourself a reason why you are doing - give meaning to your actions
    4. Set a time limit - immediacy is vital otherwise you could waste your time avoiding what it is you need/want to do
Don't just trust me - do this and experience the difference for yourself!

And you must listen to this for more inspiration on how to do! Don't forget to leave a comment to let me know how you go.

Don't think, do! - John Kennedy

    With compliments!

Last Thursday I washed my hair.  As I was styling it (and my self) my mind was filled with self-deprecating thoughts. You know - these kind of thoughts......
Oh my god!! Look at that hair/face/body- the color/style/shape/everything is so hideous/revolting/wrong/ugly/a joke!!!

Yes - those kind of thoughts. As the day went on EVERY single person I met complimented me on how I looked.
Oh your hair/dress/make up looks great!  It really suits you. I love the color.

Seriously I received compliments like theses for days! And each and every time I (defensively) responded with a quick retort like

Oh it's just a facade!  It's not how I feel on the inside. Oh really cos I hate it!

Why could I not simply accept these kind words with the grace and love in which they were given? I know I am not alone in my response.

One friend suggested that if I just let the words sink in they may 'work on me'.   Hmmm ....... I hope I get another opportunity soon to explore this strategy - keep my mouth shut or say a simple 'thank you' and let the compliments work their magic.

Have you been complimented lately? How did you respond?  Do you have a favorite compliment?

I much prefer a compliment, even if insincere, to sincere criticism - Plautus

The cup of life - what's in yours?

The cup of life - ale ale ale! Do you remember this song? Check out it here for a fun reminder.

Boy it's been a rough couple of weeks for the world hasn't it? The theme of life and death has been front and centre of every media conversation and very difficult to avoid.

For me my dog went into heart failure, survived but has a much shortened life expectancy. So the question of 'what to do when my puppy's moment comes?' was explored. I required some medical tests which brought me a night of worry (and tears). I was flooded by the question 'what would happened to my daughter if I was no longer here?' Then an elderly relative was admitted into hospital with pneumonia. She has a terminal illness and the time to say goodbye is closer then it's ever been before.

Thankfully all three of us are alive and kicking and I have the luxury to ponder over these questions while so many in the world today do not.

My child sometimes asks me 'mummy when are you going to die?' My response is easy. 'I don't know darling because it's a mystery'.

The inevitability of death is something we rarely have control over. However we can have a lot of choice over how we live our lives. We have control over how we will replenish our own 'cup of life'. And it's in these difficult times that a 'full cup' can support us the most.

So I ask myself some more questions - what do I like to have in my cup? What's missing from my cup right now? What is always in my cup that I sometimes overlook?

My ideal cup of life looks something like this:
    • A heap of fun times and laughter with family and friends
    • Cuddles and hugs
    • Sunshine
    • Both lighthearted and deep and meaningful conversation
    • Fresh sheets
    • Smiles and hellos
    • Chocolate
    • Learning something new
    • Engaging work
    • Down time
    • Gratitude
I could keep going! I need a lot to fill this cup of mine.

What about you - how do you fill your cup of life?

When you have nobody you can make a cup of tea for, when nobody needs you, that's when I think life is over - Audrey Hepburn

    Kicking goals in May

The sun is kicking goals today!

    'I'm kicking goals!'

I really love this expression.  It's a colloquial Australian way of saying you are achieving something positive and you are happy to celebrate this fact.  The 'goals' can refer to anything.

I have a vague recollection from my Oprah  viewing days of one of her experts saying it's not the 'goal' itself we desire but the feeling the achievement of that goal brings us. This 'expert' was suggesting it's more important to focus on what we want to feel as that feeling can then be attained in many different ways - ways that may not necessarily follow the standard societal expectations of success.

I generally avoid a formalised practice of goal setting. I usually feel quite uncomfortable when asked to commit to my goals in writing.

However I just love the positive and light feeling I get when I say (or hear someone say) 'I'm kicking goals'.

That's what I want for this month.

And I hope to achieve that feeling by blogging everyday this May. Will you join me?

Are you a goal setter? Tell me about your process. Are you going to Blog everyday in May ?

What has meaning to you? Anzac Day 2015?

It has been a miserable day here - the greyest of grey skies, non-stop rain and a wintery temperature. Yet none of this appears to have dampened the general public's observance of ritual and tradition this ANZAC day.

ANZAC Day occurs on 25 April every year in Australia and New Zealand. Today is the 100 year commemoration of the ANZAC landing at Gallipoli in 1915. And the 'hype' through out the community and media has been big. Understandably so.

Yet I have approached this day with a mixture of ambivalence and trepidation. No buying of badges for me. No chatting with the oldies. No sentimentality here. Avoidance was my plan. Denial my overriding desire.

Why? I hear you ask. Well - this is the first year my child has been fully exposed to the ceremony of this event through the instruction of the educational institution she attends.  I was worried about her sensitivity to the facts of the occasion. I wanted to shield her from the harsh realities and horrors of both our present day and our past.

But what a great learning opportunity! I hear you suggest.  Here they argue 'young children will have an opportunity to understand the importance of this national day, and its role in building peace in communities today.' My child however had a lot of questions (and shed some tears) about war, guns, young men dying and 'baddies'. And yes this did give me the opportunity to allow her to speak of her anxieties and frame the day in a more child centred way.

But I still feel angry. Actually I'm pissed-off.

I'm pissed off that my child has begun the journey of the loss of her innocence.

I'm pissed off that some random fourteen year old, thousands of miles away, thought it would be a great idea to behead a police officer at an ANZAC parade.

I'm pissed off that 100 years ago thousands of young vital men of varied nationalities - and their families and communities - lost their innocence and hundreds more lost their lives.

And what really sits under all my heated negative feelings?  I hear you wonder. The ever constant pain of grief.  I know I am not alone in my experience. Nor does it make me un-patriotic. Simply my meaning of this national day this year is separate from the masses.  I know my response is not fixed. It will change as I do. As we all do.

How has the anniversary impacted on you in 2015?  Let me know.

Hello October and why not ....... complain?

Today is the first day of October and it's well and truly Springtime here.

For me Spring traditionally is all about the Royal Melbourne Show, the AFL footy finals, blossoming trees, hay fever, celebrating birthdays and silently acknowledging the tragic passing of loved ones many years ago.

For the past three weeks (the majority of the new season so far) I have been struck with a sinus infection, a chest infection, conjunctivitis and the major source of my complaints - hay fever. Okay - none of these ailments are going to kill me yet I find myself in quite a murderous mood.  So I invite you to join me today in some harmless yet incredibly rewarding and therapeutic complaining.

    Let me lead the way.

How is it possible to suffer the symptoms of hay fever (itchy eyes and a runny nose) while affected by a sinus infection and conjunctivitis?

    How, how, how?!

On my fourth visit to the doctors I was prescribed a(nother) specific ointment to heal the conjunctivitis.  When I presented the prescription to the pharmacist she informed me that the ointment is in fact out of supply across the whole state of Victoria.  Why would a doctor prescribe something that is not available?

    Why, why, why?

While my tears turned to anger then to very restrained composure the pharmacist stood before me (professionally) non-responsive and unmoved.

    No, no, no!

How is Spring treating you so far? And what's the top of your complaints list?

I'm so glad I live in a world where there are Octobers - L.M. MontgomeryAnne of Green Gables

    Go Winter...... go!

It's the last day of winter here.

    I survived.

Spring has been teasing us all week. Longer days. Blue skies. Glorious sunshine. Pink and white blossoms decorating the tree lined streets. The promise of fun and new memories.

I survived these cooler months - just.

I embraced some old habits and I contemplated some new ones too.

I wonder why tomorrow offers the promise of something that seemed so elusive these past few months.

I survived. Yet I had really hoped to thrive.

    How did winter treat you?

Why not ......... play with a dog?

Have you had a 'play' today? (this week, this month, this year?)

No?  Then why not hang out with a dog or two and have some fun!

Dogs are fully present to the moment.

Dogs are impulsive, spontaneous and unpredictable.

Dogs are fully alive and ....... watchable.

Dogs have much to teach us about creative process.

As a society we now acknowledge how beneficial owning a dog is to both our physical and mental health. You can read more about these benefits here and here.

But it is easy to forget just how fun it is to be with a dog. How it can provide us with a great opportunity to simply play and be silly. How the 'presence' of a dog invites us to be present to the moment too.

Don't just listen to me, Academy Award winning actress Shirley MacLaine has so much to say about the benefits of dogs she wrote a whole book about it. ‘Terry (her rat terrier) has taught me simplicity, she has completely changed my priorities. And she just makes me laugh all the time. She makes me smile through my life now,’  says Shirley.

Don't worry if you personally do not own a dog. Ask a family member, friend or even a neighbour if you can visit their fur-baby sometime. Or you could contact your local animal shelter and enquire about their volunteer or foster programs.

No matter how you do it - throw a ball around with a dog, teach him (and yourself) a few new tricks or simply have a cuddle - make the time to get some canine energy into your day.

The great pleasure of a dog is that you may make a fool of yourself with him and not only will he not scold you, but he will make a fool of himself too - Samuel Butler

Why not ........ write your Oscar acceptance speech?

On a day where the world grieves the passing of another Hollywood legend Lauren Bacall I invite you to write your Oscar acceptance speech.

Whatever your craft is put pen to paper and write a speech in response to being recognised for your great achievements - realised or imagined!

Who are you going to thank? From your past and your present. Professional to personal.

Will you mention the person/people you propelled you into seeking the utmost excellence of your craft?

Will you make a business, personal, political or social comment?

Will you keep it short and sweet like Joe Pesci?

Private yet inspiring like Steven Soderbergh?

Or will you ramble on like Julia Roberts et al.?

This article has an interesting take on the do's and don'ts of speech making. What do you think?

Write the speech simply for yourself or for the world at large. I encourage you to enjoy the doing.

I don't care who you are. When you sit down to write the first page of your screenplay, in your head, you're also writing your Oscar acceptance speech - Nora Ephron

Is there a movie I think I should have won the Oscar for? Yeah. All of them - Morgan Freeman

    Farewell Robin Williams

    source Instagram

This morning I heard the end of the news headlines on the radio while I was driving in my car.

"And the actor Robin Williams is dead" said the news reader.

Bang! No warning. Out of nowhere.

"Fuck that" I thought to myself.  "Heart attack?" I thought to myself.

Later in the day I'm back in the car and there is more talk about Robin Williams' death.

"Bloody hell I listen to a sports radio station to avoid these types of conversations!" I think to myself.

Waiting for an appointment I check into Facebook to pass the time and the news is bombarding my news feed. Suicide.

"Oh so sad" I think to myself.

My day goes on as usual and I find myself employing all kinds of distractions to avoid being present to the moment. Any moment. I attempt to entertain myself with the lightness of Instagram and fail miserably as every second post is about the passing of Robin Williams. An outpouring of grief from many people I do not personally know for a person none of us personally knew.

I read somewhere today - did his wife say this? - it's important to not dwell on how he passed, it's important to appreciate the great work of Robin Williams.

I do feel so sad by the passing of this man whose talent and genius is/was so unique.

In fact today I just feel sad anyway. I am in the lucky position to know - really know - these feelings will pass.  Unfortunately some of us are not so lucky.....

You're only given a little spark of madness. You mustn't lose it - Robin Williams

Why not ....... go for a swim?

Today I challenge you to take the plunge and go for a swim.

No matter the weather (summer or winter).

Wherever there is water - your backyard, the local swimming pool, indoor or outdoor, a waterhole, a river or the ocean - dive on in and experience the weightless delight of your body submerged.

Find a body of water and explore how your body experiences it. You may enjoy a full-on workout of freestyle laps up and down the pool. Or you prefer to simply paddle about.

Swimming can provide you with a great low impact all body workout and it also has numerous mental health benefits as well.

I think some of the best things about splashing in a pool are the opportunities to play, have some great fun and create special memories. And it's so sensual too!

I have big friends who won't go swimming because they're too embarrassed about it. I feel that's such a shame, because actually people should be encouraging fat people who are exercising to do it, not pointing and laughing - Jo Brand
